Spent the weekend tackling the issue of making cages with retreats that the spiders would actually use. The flat mate/boyfriend suggested that I have the retreat running along a top edge of the cage rather than jutting out into space. Another couple changes were that I wove dried fern fronds into the wire mesh as, without them, the spiders usually opted not to walk on them. Finally the retreat themselves are made of plastic flexitube which the spiders actually have difficulty traversing I.e. They couldn’t even get into the damn things. So I experimented with pva + quartz sand, and making a bumpy surface with my beloved glue gun.
Made two large cages and two small ones for females and males respectively. Blonde one (flattie-boyfriend) woke me up to tell me that the females were both using their retreats. *excited but also groggy celebrations*
